At 1010 XL / 92.5 FM we believe in promoting local sports and opportunities for advancement for local student-athletes. Our latest initiative toward this objective has us partnering with the Duval County High Schools to present the Duval County High School "Scholar Athlete of the Week."  Each week a panel of Duval County High School athletic directors and counselors will select the Duval County high school "Scholar Athlete of the Week"  Recipients receive a plaque honoring their achievement, mention on 1010xl.com and the opportunity to win a $5,000 scholarship!

One scholar athlete will win the $5,000 scholarship which will be awarded in May of 2013 with another scheduled for May of 2014.  We also plan on expanding this program to St. John's, Nassau and Clay Counties beginning in August of 2013.

The Duval County High School "Scholar Athlete of the Week" is presented by Heekin Orthopedic Specialists.

This week's winner...

Amber Harrell from Paxon High School.  Amber has earned a 3.25 GPA while playing girls basketball and being named MVP of her girl's flag football team.  She is a tutor at Tiger Academy and a mentor at James Weldon Johnson Middle School.  She was a Haiti Mission volunteer and participated in Journey into Womanhood.

Shayla Loudermilk from Lee High School.  Shayla carries a 3.1 grade point average while serving as captain of the varsity volleyball team, being named all-conference in softball and playing on the girls' basketball teams.  She won the Susan Merhlust award and is a Rising Athlete Star.  She is an ahletic peer tutor, school ambassador and member of the football manager staff.  Shayla voluneers in neighborhood cleanup, with the Oakleaf Softball Association and with seniors at the Riverside Pres. Home.

Camille Robinson from Atlantic Coast High School.  Camille is a member of the varsity lacrosse team where she is the captain and has won the Leadership Award.  She has a 3.6 GPA and is in the National Honor Society and Spanish Honor Society.  She volunteers with the Jacksonville Public Library, Vacation Bible school and Sunday Church school as well as Best Buddies.  She will attend the University of Central Florida.

Carlos Tarrats from Raines High School.  Carlos is a member of the varsity football and baseball teams, being named MVP and All-Gateway Conference in baseball.  He has a 3.2 GPA and is a member of Distinguished Gentleman and A/B Honor Roll.  Carlos volunteers with the Bob Hayes Track Meet.

Lizzie McCarthy from Fletcher High School.  Lizzie is the captain of the varsity golf team and a member of the varsity tennis team as well.  She shot a 76 to win the district in girls golf and shot a 74 to place 4th in the regional competition.  Lizzie won the Gateway Conference in golf and was named All-First Coast in 2011.  Lizzie owns a 3.8 GPA and is a member of both the National Honor Society and the Spanish Honor Society where she serves as Vice President.  In the community she is a member of BEAM Walk and NHS tutoring while volunteering with the TPC and the Jacksonville Beach Public Golf Course.

Alifayaz Abdulzahair from Wolfson High School.  Alifayaz runs track and has been named the most improved player.  He is a member of the National Honor Society along with being a QuestBridge and Joe Berg Scholar.  He is involved with the International Club and the World Affairs Club and has volunteered with Courtyard Cleanup, the Latin Forum and the school monument rennovation.

Anna Tarpley from Sandalwood High School.  Anna is a four-year letterwinner in both volleyball and softball having been named FACA Player of the Year and 1st team all-state in softball.  Anna has a 3.5 GPA, is president of the GAA , works with AVID and American Sign Language, serves as Chaplain of the Junior Civitan and tutors in her free time.

  

Justin Lawrence from First Coast High School.  He is a member of the National Honor Society, National Math Honor Society, and National Art Honor Society.  On the field he is the 7A baseball player of the year, All-Gateway Conference and All-Academic Player of the Year.  In the community Justin works with Autism Speaks among other organizations.

Kelly Butler from Mandarin High School.  Kelly is in the top 1% of her class of more than 500 with a 3.94 GPA.  She is a member of the AICE Program, National Honor Society Vice President, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Senior Class Treasurer and 4H Club Treasurer.  On the field Kelly is a three sport athlete and captain of her basketball and girls flag football teams while also playing volleyball.  Kelly's community service includes Challenge Girls Club Team Leader, Volunteer at Diocesan of St. Augustine, DOSA camps, Mandarin Food Bank Volunteer and is a Soup Kitchen Team Leader.

Charmaine Pedrozo attends Ed White High School and carries a 3.9 GPA.  She currently is ranked #1 in her class of 290 students.  Charmaine is a member of the Girls Tennis team this year.  She is Vice President of the National Honor Society and a member of Student Government and Senior Class.  Her activities, awards & community service include Historian of the Dissection Club, AP Scholar Award and she participates in many projects with the Junior Civitan & Key Club.

Emily Mobley is a senior at Englewood High School and is a member of the swimming, soccer and girl's flag football teams.  She carries a 3.5 GPA along with volunteering at a local middle school and for the Jaguars' concessions.  She is a Rotary Club Scholar and a member of the FCA.
